Moving out of Oslo? What to do with your furniture
Moving out of your room in Oslo? The city itself advises trying to sell or give away what still works. And if you are registered in another municipality, you can still apply for a GjenbruksID with your rental contract. Below is what the city and the university say, with the source next to every rule.

When students move in Oslo
Many rooms come free around the end of a semester; start sorting out what to give away a few weeks before.
Give it away free
- The City of Oslo advises trying to sell or give away things that can still be used, for example on Finn, Tise or a neighbourhood swap group; alternatively you can drop them off for reuse. (City of Oslo - reuse, 2026-10-07)
On yeybu you can see what is being given away free in Oslo, and post something yourself for free.
Reuse at the recycling stations
- At the large recycling stations Smestad, Haraldrud, Grønmo, Grefsen and Ryen you can drop off furniture, tableware, toys, books, sports and leisure equipment and working electronics for reuse. (City of Oslo - reuse, 2026-10-07)
- At Grefsen and Ryen you can take reuse items free of charge from marked shelves and areas during opening hours. (City of Oslo - reuse, 2026-10-07)

GjenbruksID
- With a GjenbruksID, Oslo residents can drop off waste up to 20 times a year at no extra cost; garden waste, electrical waste and hazardous waste are unlimited. (City of Oslo - GjenbruksID, 2026-10-07)
- If you live in Oslo but are registered in another municipality, you can apply for a GjenbruksID and document that you live in Oslo, for example with a rental contract. You must apply again every calendar year. (City of Oslo - GjenbruksID, 2026-10-07)
- A GjenbruksID does not cover building, demolition and renovation waste; you pay for that per delivery. (City of Oslo - GjenbruksID, 2026-10-07)
